Composing & Theatre-MakingJoe's interests in creating new work encompass writing, composing, devising and facilitating creativity. In 2015-16 he pioneered the Devising Skills degree module at the Institute of the Arts Barcelona - equipping students with the skills to explore challenging and sensitive material through new music theatre.
Most recently, Joe's original electro-acoustic score for The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes has received critical acclaim on its US National tour and off-Broadway run with Aquila Theatre. Other collaborations with Aquila include the experimental audio design for Romeo & Juliet, and the French folk-inspired incidental music for Cyrano in 2013. Prior to this, Joe was based in Beijing, creating a new bilingual musical for the Beijing Normal University - in this project he worked closely with Chinese practitioners and students to devise Step One: A New Musical; a wacky celebration of how the arts touch our daily lives, with a cast of 94! In 2014, an evening of Joe's songs was presented at the Leicester Square Theatre, featuring a selection of works from current and previous projects and collaborations. Joe was arranger and music supervisor for Julie Atherton's 2014 album Rush of Life, a deeply personal album with new songs contributed by composers such as Lance Horne and Craig Adams. |
EducationJoe held a position as lecturer in singing and musical theatre at the Institute of the Arts, Barcelona, on their BA(Hons) degrees and the Foundation course in musical theatre. He continues to be a visiting lecturer.
Teaching one-to-one technical singing, ensemble vocals, theory and repertoire, Joe's teaching is dynamic and varied - with a strong foundation in technique. After helping create and deliver a new singing syllabus across the college, Joe designed and successfully launched the Devising Skills module on the BA Musical Theatre course - culminating in gala performances of two brand-new shows created by second-year students. Joe continues to produce shows, run projects and facilitate work at drama schools and colleges - alongside specialist singing and advanced piano teaching on a one-to-one basis.
